Find Your Landlord

Many Chicago landlords hide behind mysterious LLCs to avoid accountability.

To find your landlord, follow these steps:

Search your building address on the Cook County Assessor’s site. If your building has multiple addresses, it may be connected to a different one than the one you live in.

1.

Copy the building PIN.

2.

Go to the Cook County Clerk’s site, and paste the pin you copied. Submit an Address/Pin Search.

3.

Click “View” in the search results next to your building’s address.

4.

View the most recent doc labeled “Mortgage” under the “Doc Type” column. Toward the end of the mortgage, there will be a signature for the grantor. This is your landlord.

5.

Once you know your landlord’s name, you can use the Illinois Secretary of State website to find other LLCs (i.e. buildings) owned by the same landlord.

Landlord Mapper is an initiative to advance research into urban property ownership networks. The project seeks to address the problem of ownership obscurity by leveraging data science techniques to uncover networks of taxpayer records.
